Rolling on The Schuykill River: Roller Derby Is Back

CRASH
words By Raymond Tyler

There are very few decades that have so many iconic persons, places and things intimately tied to them as the 1970's.
Separating a room with a curtain of beads, afro pics with the fist for a handle, bean bag chairs are some of the more famous.

One weekly and in some markets nightly event that is not so well remembered is the Roller Derby.

As a 70's baby nothing says NOSTAGALIA and SEXY like BIG, BURLY, SWEATY women on rolloer skates knocking the living CRAPOLA out of each other for cash and prizes.

That my friends 30 years of age and under was the Roller Derby.

Lord knows if I had a few hundred thousand dollars laying around I would start a team or even a league.

To the best of my knowledge Roller Derby did not take as much skill or athleticism as maybe possessed by Cheryl Miller (Basket Ball), Peggy Fleming (Figure Skating) or Suzie Chafee (Ski Champ.)

Roller Derby seemed to be just big , burly, sweaty  women knocking the crap out of each other. However it was fun to watch.

So hopefully if you like to see live sporting events, or women playing rough?

You won't miss the Roller Derby this Saturday.
