The Doctor On NBA TV Last Night an Instant Classic

Original Gangsta Gentleman
Words By Raymond Tyler

My quickie review of last night's documentary on Julius Erving goes like this.
The film is a 9.5 out of 10. See it. DVR it. Save it and make sure your children watch it with you at some point. There are a hand full of films that every basket ball fan should see. I would say The Doctor is somewhere behind Hoop Dreams.

This film took me back to all of the things I loved about Doctor J while being a Laker fan.

They broke down the fact that Doc is still hands down the most popular Rucker Park player ever and the reason why Rucker Park is a more respected Basket Ball venue than almost every NBA stadium still standing. With all due respect to Lew Alcindor and Wilt Chamberlain, Dr. J too Rucker Park to a level of fame that had never been seen before.

The film showed how dominant of a one on one player Dr. J was (and in many ways I still think he was the best.) The film showed how dominant of a 1 on 5 player Doc was...infact if Doc had to beat 6 or 7 defensive players to get his dunk...the odds would still have been in his favor.

Doctor J could go around, over or straight through an opponent.

The film explained that Dr. J became the first NBA player to secure endorsements of beverages, sneakers/tennis shoes, and other merchandise. Dr. J not only inspired Michael Jordan on the court but in the advertising board rooms. Dr. J sneakers were the basket ball standard before Jordans were and were more widely worn at J's time.

The film did not explain in full that Dr. J and The Harlem Globetrotters were BASKET BALL PERIOD, until Magic Johnson and Larry Bird started their rivalry.

Maybe the most important thing they showed is that you can be the coolest man on the planet with out having to act wild or like you have lived in a cage all your life. Dr. J was a man of style and class, and remains so.

SEE THE FILM AND HAVE IT YOUR COLLECTION.
