The Constitution Center Celebrates The 50th Anniversary Of DR. Martin Luther King Jr's. I Have A Dream Speech

CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
“I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH AND THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON
AT THE NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER

Philadelphia, PA (July 31, 2013) – In conjunction with this summer’s acclaimed feature exhibition The 1968 Exhibit, the National Constitution Center will look back on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—whose life was tragically cut short in 1968—on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and the iconic “I Have a Dream” Speech. On Wednesday, August 28, 2013, through moving live performances and thought-provoking discussions, visitors will explore the civil rights movement of the 1960s and reflect on how our nation has changed over the past 50 years. All activities are FREE with general museum admission.

To celebrate this important anniversary, the museum is partnering with White Pines Productions, Global Citizen, the Philadelphia Folksong Society, the William Way LGBT Community Center, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

The centerpiece of the day will be a concert followed by an awe-inspiring theatrical recitation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" Speech, beginning at 1 p.m. on the museum’s Grand Hall Overlook. Featuring blues/soul singer Alexis P. Suter, hailed for her powerful “gale-force voice” (NPR), the concert will highlight 1960s favorites that were performed by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and other music legends at the 1963 March on Washington. A diverse ensemble of local actors will perform a passionate recitation of the “I Have a Dream” Speech in the style of a Greek chorus.

Visitors can also join a discussion about Bayard Rustin—the architect of the March on Washington and a close mentor of Dr. King’s—with scholar Emma Lapsansky-Werner and Rustin biographer Dr. Michael Long at 11 a.m. inF.M. Kirby Auditorium. The discussion will be paired with select readings from the play Rustin and the March by William di Canzio, performed by highly regarded Philadelphia actors Frank X, James Ijames, and Aimee Kelly. This program is presented in partnership with White Pines Productions.

Other activities and events throughout the day include:

Stories of ’68: Memories of Dr. King
The 1968 Exhibit

MLK and His Legacy
Grand Hall Lobby
10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m.
Visitors can learn about Dr. King’s vision of himself as an agent of service, how that understanding led him to the use of nonviolent activism, and how other leaders from around the world have echoed Dr. King’s call to service in the name of community betterment.

Trailblazers to Freedom Traveling Trunks
DeVos HallStraight from the African American Museum in Philadelphia, these trunks shed light on the personal, professional, and political lives of Philadelphia’s diverse early African American community with replica artifacts, clothing, and documents packed into each. Be introduced to Octavius Catto, scholar, educator, abolitionist, and baseball player, as well as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, fiery abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and poet. These trunks were prepared in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia, with the support of Comcast, by Interpret Green.

Civil Rights Story Time
Annenberg Center for Outreach and Education Lobby
Throughout the day, families can listen to stories about Dr. King, from books including Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington by Frances E. Ruffin, A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. by David A. Adler, and My Dream of Martin Luther King by Faith Ringgold. Stories will be read by representatives from Global Citizen.

Talk Back Board
Grand Hall Lobby
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Visitors can post their responses to questions related to Dr. King, diversity, and citizenship on a special “talk back” board in the museum’s Grand Hall Lobby.

Craft and Activity Tables
Grand Hall Lobby
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Families will have the opportunity to create “I Have a Dream…” mobiles and refrigerator magnets featuring civil rights heroes.

The must-see exhibition of the summer, The 1968 Exhibit, brings one of America’s most colorful, chaotic, culture-shifting years vividly to life. On display for a limited time only through September 2, 2013, the exhibition illuminates the power of “We the People” to exercise and expand our freedoms. Visitors can view an actual Bell “Huey” helicopter used by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and a full-size replica of the Apollo 8 command module. Guests will flip over iconic pop culture memorabilia like the sweater and sneakers worn by Fred Rogers in the show Mister Rogers Neighborhood; plus, you can kick back and enjoy clips of 1968’s most popular TV shows and movies.

Trailer Parking with Raymond Tyler: Baggage Claim

In Trailer Parking, Raymond Tyler checks out a trailer and gives you his thought on the film based on the trailer.

NOT SOUL PLANE

First things first when I saw that another movie involving air planes with a black cast was coming out, I had flash backs or should I say "trash" backs of Soul Plane. Other than the brilliant Soul Plane 2 trailer from The Boondocks let's never speak on this again.

Baggage Claim

The Good News and Bad News is that the trailer reminds me of several other movies.
Parts of the trailer reminds me of Brides Maids.

Parts of the trailer reminded me of What's Your Number.
The Bad News is that I am weary of the premise that successful Black women have a on going struggle to find successful Black men to marry.

The Good News is that Jill Scott brings a pitch perfect sense of timing to the jokes in the trailer.
Scott's days as a spoken word artist seems to have given her the ability to deliver punch lines and act.
Scott seems to use almost all of her talents to portray a supporting character that is fully developed not just a carbon copy of "the wise cracking best friend."

Over All

Over all...Baggage Claim brings a lot of characters we have seen before in other comedies. However, the writing seems to be smart and brings enough new ideas to be entertaining.

Baggage Claim should be a great date movie if not a ground breaking comedy.

So based on the trailer.

I am giving this film a thumbs up if not a ringing endorsement.
The film looks fun and should provide enough laughs for your weekend.

Watch the trailer and judge for yourself and tell us what you think.

Justice For Trayvon and Justice For All...An Editorial From Raymond Tyler

REAL JUSTICE IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST A HOODIE!

Question: For everyone on Facebook posting "outrage" about the Zimmerman trial. Would you be willing to boycott the entire state of Florida for a year?

Can people  believe in THAT JUSTICE?

Can the people that TRULY believe MURDER is Wrong?

Can We Say..."If You Do Not Convict Zimmerman?"

We will not do South Beach...Nor do business with south Beach.

We will not buy Heat, Dolphins, Hurricanes, Jacksonville, Marlins, Ect. gear. No sports tickets and we won't watch any games featuring those teams.

WHO IS REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT JUSTICE? Not just for Trayvon but for my niece, your own children, our children still here?

I have contended since the murder of Yusef Hawkins...BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT OUR FREEDOM! America Knows That!

REAL Justice In AMERICA TODAY...Requires...More than a facebook status.

What WE Need is...

SACRIFICE-There are more important things then going to celebrity parties and buying out the bar.

SERIOUSNESS-Real discussions about change and opportunity. Real Housewives can be a guilty pleasure but it should not be confused with a "career move" or "come up."

GETTING BACK TO BASICS-Re-Programming our kids to have real goals. Re-programming our kids to understand that reading is not corny. Math is not for sissies. WE HAVE TO STOP DOING ANY DAMN THING FOR A DOLLAR! Raising our boys to be PIMPS and THUGS instead of KINGS is not COOL. And raising our daughters to be STRIPPERS and SIDE PIECES that get nice jewelry IS NOT CUTE.

KEEPING IT REAL AND RIGHT-Young Black THUGS and GANG BANGERS have a uniform whether we want to admit it or not. WE NEED TO STOP ALLOWING OUR KIDS TO DRESS LIKE THEY ARE HEADED TO PENITENTIARY.

Am I saying that Trayvon should have been killed because of the way he looked? No.

What I am saying is months before the murders of Trayvon Martin and Troy Davis, I tried to discuss the murder of other black people like Latasha Harlins, Eleanor Bumpers, and others. Many of the same people "enraged" about Trayvon Martin...felt that I was bringing up "old ish from the past." Many of the poets I spoke to just said things that were more ignorant than the people that never claimed to be "enlightened."

I haven't said much about Trayvon on the web because I know...it doesn't mean much.

The truth is most of the folks "enraged" about Trayvon will be partying in Miami even as another child will be murdered. Then as now, they will be willing to sacrifice nothing more than a Facebook status or a Tweet.

And America knows that better than I do.
