A Mid Summer's Night With The Monkees (Yes Mike Nesmith Too)

 CALL IT A COME BACK!

The surviving members of The Monkees
Since The Monkees celebrated their 20th Anniversary in the 1980's; Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davy Jones have been touring together as The Monkees doing their classic material and even releasing some new music.

For most of that time The Monkees have been without Mike Nesmith who expressed a level of discomfort even at the height of Monkee Mania in the sixties. At one point the American made for TV band had even out sold The Beatles.

However, by the time The Monkees had celebrated their 20th Anniversary , Nesmith was a pioneer in the world of music video as the mind behind the classic long form video Elephant Parts.

To make a decades long story shorter, Mike never said anything negative about the members of the band but made it clear that he was not up for taking the stage and "getting the band back together." Until Now.

I wasn't around when Last Train To Clarksville and Day Dream Believer originally charted, but I will try and get good seats for this one.

Rolling on The Schuykill River: Roller Derby Is Back

CRASH
words By Raymond Tyler

There are very few decades that have so many iconic persons, places and things intimately tied to them as the 1970's.
Separating a room with a curtain of beads, afro pics with the fist for a handle, bean bag chairs are some of the more famous.

One weekly and in some markets nightly event that is not so well remembered is the Roller Derby.

As a 70's baby nothing says NOSTAGALIA and SEXY like BIG, BURLY, SWEATY women on rolloer skates knocking the living CRAPOLA out of each other for cash and prizes.

That my friends 30 years of age and under was the Roller Derby.

Lord knows if I had a few hundred thousand dollars laying around I would start a team or even a league.

To the best of my knowledge Roller Derby did not take as much skill or athleticism as maybe possessed by Cheryl Miller (Basket Ball), Peggy Fleming (Figure Skating) or Suzie Chafee (Ski Champ.)

Roller Derby seemed to be just big , burly, sweaty  women knocking the crap out of each other. However it was fun to watch.

So hopefully if you like to see live sporting events, or women playing rough?

You won't miss the Roller Derby this Saturday.

Spoken Word's Nasty Girl Is Coming To Philly

JESSICA HOLTER
More Than Just The Nasty Girl Next Door!
Words By Raymond Tyler

Jessica Holter as best as I can tell is a woman for all seasons and some seasons still yet to come.

Yes...she is the founder of The Punany Poets and I have personally had fun, arousing, clinical conversations about sex and how to talk about sex with other people with Miss Holter.
However, when I think of Jessica Holter, the first thing that comes to mind is her remarkable talent for business.

It just so happens that for Jessica Holter her business is the pleasure of sensual word play...and sometimes acting it out on stage. Holter's role as a business woman that is also a poet has really made Miss Holter an icon in the arts world.

However, unlike people that just look at sex as a commodity, Miss Holter is a believer in the value of human connection (even if that connection is in pleasing yourself) and also a believer in healthy pleasure.

The Punany shows I have sampled also discuss being protected from disease as well as abuse and emotionally turmoil.

I could compare Jessica Holter to Wonder Woman...but in reality she is much more like the whole Justice League...(minus Aqua Man cause come on really?) So Philly Get Ready.

The Night Life Of Philadelphia: Must Be The Music

Must Be The Music Invite and words by Mike Jackson

Azure Ultra Lounge

 www.azureultralounge.com

  • 1437 South St
    Philadelphia, PA 19146

Editor's note: Mike Jackson has thrown some of the most sophisticated and fun events we have attended over the years. If you are familiar with the terms "top shelf" and "upscale"? Check out a Mike Jackson event.

The Penn Relays have been a staple in Philadelphia for many years and for the past 10 years Urban Socialite has not only been that same staple in Philadelphia night life, it has also sponsored at least one official Penn Relay Weekend event. This year will be no different as we also introduce you to the new weekly event entitled, MUST BE THE MUSIC.

Anyone can get a few hundred people in a building but not everyone knows the secret on how to keep them. It's not free admission, it's not free sample sips and its surely not a paid celebrity host. Our answer is simple, it MUST BE THE MUSIC.

The timeless art that can change a mood and in some cases, change a life. We can all connect to a certain point in our life when we hear that one song that takes us there. It could be a childhood memory, good times in middle, high school or a college experience. It can even be something from last week but when we hear that song it's like a key to a special place that sometime only you or a few select people can truly appreciate what it means when YOU say, "that's my jam!"

MUST BE THE MUSIC is not and old school event, but it does require an extensive love for real party music. Our long list of great Philly DJs are looking forward to putting together sets for the crowds that want to hear Tribe mixed with some Kendrick Lamar and some how incorporate that rock and roll party song that was a guilty pleasure that you thought was only yours. We are seriously about to change the face of the Philly scene because the jeans and blazers along with the cocktail dress with stilettos has a real party scene to enjoy on Friday nights.

Our location of choice, Azure Ultra Lounge, was one of your favorite party spots between 2004 and 2006 when we hosted the House Party at Fiso Lounge. This venue has since been remodeled to provide you with more dancing, lounge space, VIP booths and private rooms by request. There is also an outdoor roof deck, glass sky bar and patio tiki bar to give you some much needed indoor/outdoor action. It's a completely different decor and aesthetically makes more sense.

Birthday packages are the cheapest in town and come with an open bar option. Email nupe894@aol.com for booking and questions.

We look forward to providing your entertainment again and want to assure you that this party is one many of you have asked for over and over again. You can make this party what ever you want it to be. Great people, great vibe and of course great music.

See you this and every Friday night.

Open For Debate: Should Jay Z Be On The Cover Of Time Magazine?

Since the release of The Sugar Hill Gang's Rappers Delight hip hop music and culture has inspired vigorous debate.
Didn't hip hop originate in the Bronx? Can you call people rapping music?

Perhaps one of the most spirited and ongoing debates has been about hip hop's glorification of violence and disrespect of women. The truth is, the list of rappers to never discuss violence or sexual escapades with various women is extremely short. You even have women like Lil Kim that glorify gun play, the drug game and her sexual adventures with men.

Still, other forms of art such as TV and film are rarely called to task for their depictions. However, hip hop music and culture has always been deeply rooted in real homes and families unlike the Hollywood sets for TV and movies. There are also several generations of fans that claim ownership of "real hip hop" vs. what other generations call "real hip hop."

So less than a week since Time Magazine has officially released their list of 100 most influential people of the day with Jay-Z on the cover, the debate about who and what is acceptable and positive in hip hop and for the youth has renewed.

Discussing the issues revolving around Jay-Z on the cover are two successful and upwardly mobile women of color.

Naila Mattison is a mother of a pre-teen son. She is also the writer of a collection of soul jarring poetry about hip hop, called Lyrically Gifted. Mattison has also had a front seat for the emergance of the Philly Hip Hop scene sinces The Roots were the Square Roots.

On the other side of the discussion is Elizabeth Rozier a NJ native that describes herself has a fan of the music and culture since the 1980's. Rozier is also a producer on the radio show Saturday Night's After Dark which airs on 91.7 FM WLFR.

Naila-Seriously? And this is a good thing why? Clearly it's because he always presented an image of positive uplift meant for our young men and respect for women.......#chooseyourheroeswisely.

Elizabeth-
I'm surprised at your post/reaction to this, specifically because you're a poet = story teller = the same thing Jay-Z is. This man NEVER hid his his not so squeaky clean background and let the world witness his GROWTH and TRANSFORMATION as an artist, as a MAN and as a BRILLIANT BUSINESS MAN which in my eyes are ALL of the reasons he deserves this cover. A man who speaks his mind at all times, stands up for what he believes in and has made ONE HELL OF A MARK on MUSIC, the BLACK COMMUNITY, BUSINESS and the WORLD is a lot to dispute to me. I mean if you don't think Ivy League schools teaching classes on him and creating text books around his grind and talent etc etc and so forth is a big deal and that he doesn't deserve this because of his street cred, then all I have to say is WOW!

Naila- Jay z is not an island, he had a marketing mogul give him the backing to get to where he is. I'm not looking for a boy scout, but the fact is that as an mc, and you can pull quotes from his own albums, jay z made the conscious decision to push derogatory images to make money....again, I don't ask for a boy scout, but someone with integrity.

Elizabeth- I've been into hip-hop since the early 80's and within those 30 years I wouldn't classify J as one of the artists who glorified derogatory images etc. did he do a bit of that, why yes he did BUT just as you said he isn't an island, guess what? He didn't create his own videos. The video producers did. And as we all know most images in videos aren't the most pure. BUT once he began to "own" more, there was less and less of that in the videos off the top of my head to be truthful, Big Pimpin is the main video that comes to mind that had the most derogatory images. No others jump out at me. And in regards to his rhymes, like I said, he is a master storyteller who told what he lived so I can't knock anything he has said. But let's agree to disagree on this one.

Naila- Tyler Perry, Jay Z and BET....all impactful at the expense positive images.

Now that we have heard from the ladies. Can we get two gentlemen to discuss this issue?
Ladies and Gentlemen both...where do you come down on this issue?
