The goal of the Young Fathers United program is to improve the communication and interaction between fathers and their children, expand young fathers' understanding of child rearing and discipline, improve academic performance for those in school and to provide a peer and adult support network for young fathers in the community.
The program, created in 2001 by IDAAY Founder and Executive Director S. Archye Leacock, services approximately 100 young fathers annually throughout Philadelphia. Some workshops include “How to Balance Adolescence and Parenthood,” "Basic Health and Childcare," "Child Abuse and Neglect," “Family Trends,” in which youth will examine their family genogram to analyze how a father’s upbringing may impact the way that he raises his child; and the “Historical Trends of Multi-Ethnic Families” workshop that gives youth an understanding of different ethnicities within African-American heritage that impact parenting styles. Individual and group counseling is also offered. Additional activities of the program include case management services, guest speakers and group field trips.
Transportation assistance and childcare services are available upon request. For more information and to register for the Young Fathers United program contact 215-901-6976 or go to www.idaay.org.
